The 1841 Census in the UK was the forth census taken in Britiain.

But it wasn’t until the 1841 census that names were recorded.
The 1841 census was taken on June 6 and it references where everyone lived on from midnight on June 6th to June 7th. It is filed at the Public Record Office. After information was recorded on pre-printed census schedules, a schedule was left with a household and later collected by the enumerator. If there was no one in the house who could write, the enumerator helped to record the information.

From this census we can gain all sorts of useful information while tracking down ancestry. Descriptions of buildings and there uses, the Age and sex of each person, males were in one column, females in a separate column. Each persons occupation or trade. The birthplace village town or county unless they weren’t British. In that case an as F is inserted in the column for “born in foreign parts”

When it came to recording ages on the 1841 Census the details are accurate for children up to the age of 15. thereafter adults are rounded to the nearest 5 years or more likely rounded down.

Unfortunately, the original census schedules have been destroyed and it is the census enumerator’s books that researchers see on the microfilm. Because the information in the books is a copy of the information on the schedule, there were often mistakes made in transcribing the information. Fortunately the 1841 census is now digitised for all to use, and useful it certainly is.

Discover how to find ancestors

There are so many ways to search for ancestors that you can sometimes find it all a bit much. So here are a few simple tips i have found after several years of research and many hours spent hunting for my ancestors.

Set aside some time.
For example you have some time off work, so why not make a few arrangements with relatives. Have them over and let them know the purpose is to discover some of your ancestors. If they know you want to find ancestors there likely to prepare before hand their mind and photo albums.

Choose one line of ancestors
Once you have built up a few ideas of how you intend to move your family tree forward, choose one line only. By this i mean choose either to find the ancestors from your mother or fathers side and stick with that initially. depending on the rarity of the family surname may make a difference here. Try to take the rarer name as their will be a lot less results and thereby make it easier to discover members of your ancestry.

Choose which on-line tool to use and stick with it.
Ancestry sites aren’t always too cheap so it may be good to trial a few first and then stick with one. We have a Free ancestry Trial page with all the latest offers on so take advantage of this before you commit your self to a long term subscription.

Finally don’t give up.
You’ll find points where it appears like you cant progress. This is the time to post a few comments on forums and email members with the same or similar surnames. Also continue sharing your findings with your family members as it may stir their memories and before you know it you can find another line of the tree in a direction you didn’t expect.

Ancestors are there to be found but its sometimes finding the clue to discover them that takes the time.

Remember finding ancestors can be great fun and can provide some surprises along the way!

There are few hobbies more interesting than tracing your ancestors. But there are a lot of ways to go about it. So why not combine them and make quick progress as you define your own family tree. You may find our recent article “How to find ancestors” helpful.

Today we reveal 4 methods to help you in your search at ancestry.com uk and using a combination of all of the ways may give you the best results.

1. Family Members

The first method has to be to gather together what is already around you. Relatives, birth and marriage records, known facts. You can ask different family members for any information that they have about your ancestors. You might be amazed by what people know. You should try to get to everyone in your family to fill in as many blanks as possible. Even if they just know tidbits of information, it might be enough to help you when you are doing further research. Also you can ask if your family members might know of others who might have information such as friends. They may know of additional resources. The smallest piece of information could be the most valuable.

2. The Internet

Ancestry.com in the UK is probably the most powerful tool to start with. Use it along with ancestrycom.co.uk to get the most out of it. Ancestry.com has a free service and different levels of pay service. They allow you to build a family tree in your free 14 day trial. You can then research and they will see if they can match you up to other family trees that have been submitted. You may even connect with family members that you did not know you had. They also help you access records that could be of help such as census records. Additionally GenesReunited.co.uk is another great way to get ahead.

3. Family Records

Some cabinets or bottom drawers may reveal a hive of information for your research. Finding old records or old diaries from the family can be very useful. What about old photo albums and picture albums can be a great resource, especially ones that are labeled or have writing on the back. Of course you should certainly look into any records of someone who has already researched the family tree. There are many other records, both in person or online that could be of help. For instance, a lot of churches kept records and this may help you. Sometime local libraries might have records as well.

4. A Proffessional

At Ancestrycom we are always aware that sometimes the proffessional is the only way to budge a tree that seems to go no further. Do shop around as prices can vary and skills are often diverse. Some people even sell such services on ebay. Different people charge different amounts depending on the time you need spent on it and how deep you want them to dig.

How do you get started doing family history research on Ancestry.Com?

Follow these 3 easy steps when you visit www.ancestry.com and start discovering your family’s history.

Try to keep as many documents as you can on hand as the marriage certificates have a lot of detail. From this you can calculate the dates of birth of your parents and then obtain a birth certificate for each one, whichever one you start with will give you the direction of your first family tree.
