Starting Your Ancestry Research
If you’re new to tracing your family tree and working out the ancestry line then you may well find the next few questions very helpful
1. I haven’t a clue where to start?
Start by writing down all the names and dates of all the relatives that you can think of. Even sensible guess work will be useful at this point
2. How do i know where the gaps in my family tree are?
With your family tree populated with what you do know it will become evident where the gaps are. Now you’re ready to really track down those missing ancestors.
3. I’m stuck at a few ancestors, any other ways forward?
Do you or your relatives have any Birth, Marriage and Death certificates? Do any relatives that remember events or useful information. Print off the information you do have along with a tree and show this to relatives as it may spark off other memories.
4. I still feel I’m making little progress on my family tree, any other suggestions?
Use a subscription to one of the well known sites such as
These will provide census records and a huge database of other trees to help you benefit from the work of like-minded people.
5. Where should the family tree start?
Pick one family name and focus on that surname initially. If you have an unusual surname in the family, use this first as it will be a lot easier to find quick results.
Now you should be well on your way to finding a lot more about your ancestors.
