Its hard to imagine, but as this picture shows, pre wessex way meant that you could drive all the way from winton to Bournemouth Square with very little disturbance. This photo illustrates how Wimborne raod led into Richmond Hill (no wessex way roundabout in those days) This photo image shows the top of Richmond Hill with the 294 heading towards the Square. Note in the background the reversing triangle at Bodorgan Road in the Background to get your bearings.
This shot shows the end of Bryanstone Road. Apart from the traffic little has changed. Barclays bank is currently on the corner . The picture to the right is
You can see how things have changed, in the 1960s Estate agent Fox and Sons was sat above the Tailors. Now this is the current situation of the Fox and Sons office. To this day the "estate agents" and "auctioneers" signs are there. The only change is the Fox and Sons sign has moved to the ground floor shop. Notice the Pub to the side is now totally gone. Its been replaced with New Look and Superdrug along with an opticians.
This is now currently Grahams Electrics and after being established in 1975 moved into the next door shop too. In this picture Peter Bence was a tobaconnist and confectioner.
In this photograph we see the junction of Castle Lane as it meets Wimborne Road. The trolley bus is heading west through moordown and into Winton as can be seen by its info. This area now has greatly changes with traffic lights and an exceptionally busy road leading to castle point.
In 1906 Moordown Depot was built. This image shows the main frontage viewed from Barrie Road. Many may remember the extremely large green roller shutters that spent many years closed after the bus station became inactive. On the photo you can see the newsagent on the corner of Barrie Road (still there). Also the roof to the extention to the bus depot is seen in the background on the right.
In the 1970s this building became a storage place for the Post Office Telephones as a vehicle depot and was then sadly demolished in 1984. A new Somerfield supermarket now sits on the site along with a small housing estate. The extension was added around 1920 to accomodate for the growing number of visitors in Winton wanting to travel into Bournemouth. You can match the white roof on both pictures to see how they were related.
