One of the landmarks of Winton Banks has to be the Electric Palace as it was known in 1901 on the Alma Road junction. Since 1901 Wintons first Cinema sat on the corner showing films as it was one of the first areas in Winton to have electricity . It then changed its name to the Winton Palce Theatre." the only place of amusement in Winton" was its tag line. By 1918 it was known as The Electric Palace. In 1928 the Winton Electric Palace and in 1930 the Plaza which became rather rundown until it emerged after the 2nd world war as the Continental. As larger cinemas developed in Bournemouth and The Moderne was built (now a bingo hall). The small Continental gradually lost popularity. By 1981 suveys were being conducted to see if it could be saved from demolition. The assessment proved to lead to its demolition, and a new pub was built on the site, along with a widening of the main Alma road and a closing down of the unusaul toilet that some may rember went underground with glass tiles to enable the light through.
