Winton Carnival

An on-going Ancestrycom project

Carnival Atmosphere

2006 has proven to be a special year as it is the first year that the town has a carnival and a market. It's almost like a turn around to yesteryear, with the heart of the community being displayed in these very exciting areas. So what is the carnival all about. Paddi from By Design Interiors arranged the carnival with great success. It took place on July 15th 2006.

Winton Ghost Town

winton desolateEarly before the start of the carnival a very rare thing happened on July 15th 2006. The normally busy Wimborne road became epmtied at 9 oclock with the whole area shut down from Calvin road through to Alma road. The pictures are proof of this very rare moment in the modern history of Winton.

In this picture the main Wimborne Road is just being closed at Winton Banks. This proved a bit perplexing to many drivers unaware of what was going on at the time.

Where have all the cars gone?

no traffic in wintonno traffic in wintonThes two phots were taken around 9.30 with the carnival starting at 10am. they are looking both ways down Wimborne road and as you can see -it was clear - this really must be one of the few time since the early 1900s that Winton has been so clear in daylight on a saturday morning. Unless of course you know different. So history was certainly in the making here.

Ready to get started ?

The coulourful carnival was almost ready to begin. At 10 am it set off following wimbounre road alond to Cardigan Road and finally heading down Maxwell road towards Winton Rec.

1000s of Winton locals

no traffic in wintonwinton carnival startsThe Carnival traveled down Wimborne Road before the crowds and headed through Winton. At Winton Rec there must of been thousands of locals turning out - a huge success with many sketches, bands and shows going on as well as competitions and the regular farmers market that normally positions itself at Cardigan road.

Both sides of the ground was used and it was apparent that this looked like its success would make it a regular calendar event. well done to all who organised a great day.

How to help

Lost winton is a large project, we intend to find as many pictures as possible and build up a good library of pictures available for all to enjoy. If you can scan your images then make sure they are of a good quality (around 300dpi) if you want to send then send all photos as a jpg and of a good quality optimization. It would be a shame to loose the quality, so if in doubt then please contact us and ask.
